Hi! I am Catie Miller, a civil servant based in Washington, DC. I have worked in the public sector for fifteen years. One of my recent projects has been to create and coordinate government-wide campaigns for the federal government.
Public Social I love You is a newsletter for the people who write our PSAs.
For the People, By the People
Each day millions of people interact with some level of the government. We drink clean water, cash social security checks, renew driver’s licenses, or take out small business loans. And more often than not, the front door we walk through to access those services is a virtual one.
Our challenge: Many agencies, particularly federal ones, focus more on press than social and digital communications. As a rule, Congress or the media calling us for comment is an agency’s first priority, while maintaining our social media and websites is a distant second.
In People and PSAs We Trust
This perception is starting to change. With social and digital media now often being the first touchpoint people have with government and public entities, our online presence and strategy now directly shapes our policies. It most certainly impacts the people’s perception of and trust in government. Which makes our work even more critical.
It may be radical, but I believe digital and social copy shapes our policy and thus our lives.
Public Social I Love You is the newsletter I wish I had when I started in government communications. I and many others who manage social and digital platforms for gov learned to do so with little guidance. And yes, there are many creative, dedicated people working in this space. There are even those who make us laugh even when we have to take off our shoes (Looking at you, TSA). This is a place to hear directly from them.
